State of the Nomic Archive
SN-003
Turn:
20030518
Executive:
Stevil
My first State of The Nomic was filled with some distressing news, however I did express a desire to fill this one with more uplifting items. I'm pleased to say the State of Nomicron is extremely strong. We have had an excellent four turns filled with growth, exciting new proposals, several fixes and clarifications of the rule set, and our first Supreme Court case.
We saw the birth of two new political parties - the Structurists, a sub game advocacy party and COALESCE who hold dear three tenants: Fun, Order and Destruction. A majority of Nomicronians does not overtly associate with any of the three political parties, however I believe each of the movements is gaining some favor and I expect some true politicking to erupt soon.
We witnessed two explosions of the Atomic Bomb, however these were happily offset by the addition of Tuecer (since inactivated), Catesby and X the Owl.
Several rules, amendments and referendums to Mappa related items were passed. They include 'power-ups' to give additional bonuses to players, wormholes that allow for more extensive movement (I myself hope to be one of the first to explore one of them), the Mappa, with Pitboss's elegant rule is now a torus, and a large, multiplayer game of Gomicron is now possible. Despite these wonderful new additions, I believe that the Mappa is still yet in its infancy with the realization of its full potential quite a ways off.
I'm pleased to see Nomicron grow and be as strong as ever. The best measure of a Nomic is a long life, and I do not see the and of Nomicron any time soon.

My fellow Nomicronians, I am faced with the difficult challenge of following up Pitboss' elegant State of the Nomic as I wrap up my first term and begin my second as the Executive. We have continued to grow in new and exciting ways in the past four turns. The increase to our population continued and as a result, we have seen four consecutive turns where the number of proposals was at least double that of any other turn prior to my taking office. The first official political party has formed, and I suspect that others will solidify and come into formal existence soon.
I have always found it enjoyable that in Nomicron is mirrored some of the socio-political events of our time. The Atomic Bomb, the Supreme Court, Survivor:Nomicron, all are ideas generated from current events, however, not all of these reflections are positive.
Last week, deltanine presented evidence to the Gerontocrats and another long-time player that an agent might be working against the very game we have come to enjoy. I have attached the original message for you to review. This message points directly to conversations on the B Nomic message board that describe plans to subjugate and destroy other Nomics. This type of behavior is astonishing. We were unable to understand why one or more individuals would conspire to break another game simply because that game did not behave as they wished.
Secrecy was important, as we were unable to evaluate which, if any of the new, less active players might simply be duplicates promoting an agenda not in the best interest of Nomicron. We all found the idea of operating in secret distasteful and resolved to reveal all once we were certain we could combat the threat. Our first step was to ensure that we could trust a majority of the players. After careful consideration, we invited Misuba, Tovan, Senso and Ouroboros to review the evidence and help us decide what to do. I have also attached the invitation letter for review. We planned to resolve this situation the Nomic way, through the adoption of rules that would safeguard our security.
I hope that Pakaran, Piglet, Tommy, Llama and Emil understand why we did not include them. We did not want to start a witch-hunt and drive good players away. We mean no disparagement against their character and hope they will continue to enjoy the game of Nomicron.
BvS has not changed in thought, deed or action since his self-proclaimed 'soul-searching' on April 19. I have no reason to believe we will see any changes in his behavior that will make BvS a welcome member of this Nomic. Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice, shame on us.
I will submit an impeachment referendum for next turn against BvS (the player formerly known as Baron Von Skippy) for his negative actions, personal attacks against fellow players and threats against Nomicron. At that point, the players shall decide the fate of BvS as a player of Nomicron.
My fellow players, I urge you all to abstain from responding to BvS' shameless attacks. They do nothing to promote the intellectual integrity of Nomicron. With any luck, we will soon no longer be subject to his behavior.
I hope that we can put this all behind us as quickly as possible and return to the enjoyable pursuit of points, thought-provoking debate, paradox and structure while at the same time keeping everything Simple. I also hope to fill my next State of the Nomic with much more pleasant news.

My fellow Nomicrons, as it is the final turn of my term as the Executive, it is my duty to report to you on the state of the nomic. Because of the hard work and high purpose of all our Players, these are good times for Nomicron. We have doubled the number of active players and increased the amount of significant debate. Our leadership in the world of nomic is unrivaled. Ladies and gentlemen, the state of our nomic is strong.
First, we should all welcome the players that have joined during this historic period of unprecedented growth. Welcome aboard Senso, deltanine, Tovan, Ouroboros, Piglet, misuba, Baron von Skippy, and Tommy. We all look forward to your contributions to the great game of Nomicron. Since players are the real heart and soul of any nomic game, we, the existing players of Nomicron, are grateful that you have chosen our little slice of nomic to enrich your debating skills.
Also during this time period we have seen many additions to the rule set. Everything from the creation of recruitment bonuses (and the multiple Requests For Judgments stemming from them) to the modification of the requirements for winning to the creation of an Axis Of Evil. The craft and creativity in these rules are astonishing. Never before in Nomicron have there been so many intelligent proposals to vote on, turn after turn. We can only assume that with our esteemed new players joining that this pace of innovation will only increase.
Finally, this State Of The Nomic would be incomplete without a mention of the informal party system that has begun to evolve in the last few turns. On one side we have the self-declared "Simplists" who's main platform seems to be that rules should be as simple as possible (without being overly and trivially simple). This platform also implies a bias against using points as a measure of "winning." On the other side we have the so-called "Pointists" who, like most established power bases, looks to use the accumulation of points to continue its domination of the rule set, mostly through the clever introduction of "point requirements" in their proposals. This effectively keeps those without points from fully participating in the game. If my interpretation of these parties and their platforms are misinformed, this is most likely due to the fact that they are informal and just beginning to take form.
As this may well be my last State Of The Nomic for a while, I would like to take this opportunity to declare my allegiance to the Simplist platform. I too believe that points are a poor way of determining who is "winning" or who should "win" in the end. Perhaps if the rules that gave out points were more reflective of significant contributions to the game, I would be less inclined to feel this way. However, that being said, I do believe that points have a place in Nomicron and, if used judiciously, can add a certain richness to the game. It is my intention to propose rule changes that will institute points as a measure of "political capital" rather than just pegs on a giant cribbage board called Nomicron. I hope that others with a Simplist bent will join me in this endeavor.
May the Muse Of Nomic bless you and guide you as we craft our future. Long live the Great Game Of Nomicron!
